Sporting Life Preview

It will be a brave punter who bets odds-on a horse who has never run over a straight mile and there will be plenty willing to take on ANIMAL KINGDOM but the fact is he's 10lb clear on official ratings and has the ability to race on any surface over a variety of trips. The 2011 Kentucky Derby winner, last year's Breeders' Cup Mile runner-up and this year's Dubai World Cup hero looks different class to these rivals, emphasised by his victory at Meydan where he put Red Cadeaux, rated 7lb lower at the time, firmly in his place and he's the automatic selection. Elusive Kate is next best on official figures but a line through Breeders' Cup Mile fourth Excelebration, who beat her twice last year, gives her plenty to find with the selection. Declaration Of War is very highly regarded at Ballydoyle and there were excuses made after his poor effort in the Lockinge, his first attempt at the highest level. The fact that he's in another Group 1 suggests very much better is expected though the evidence isn't there at present. Aljamaaheer finished in front of him at Newbury and can go well though it's difficult to imagine him beating a horse of Animal Kingdom's quality and Penitent, who was conceding 5lb to Gregorian and third-placed Gabrial in the Diomed, could snatch a place at a big price.

Oddschecker Verdict

The recent Queen Anne roll of honour includes the likes of Goldikova, Canford Cliffs and Frankel and the profile of this year's ante-post favourite ANIMAL KINGDOM has a similarly classy look to it. Graham Motion's Dubai World Cup hero drops back in trip today but was far from disgraced when second in the Breeders' Cup Mile last November and is expected to go well over a stiff 1m. His trainer reported last week that he has gone well in his prep work and his chances of victory were boosted by the omissions of Most Improved and Giofra at an earlier forfeit stage. Elusive Kate is a dual Group 1 winner over 1m and should give it her best shot from the front under the tactically astute William Buick, while Sovereign Debt (second), Aljamaaheer (third) and Declaration Of War (fifth) were outclassed by Farhh in the Lockinge and are likely to be vying for a supporting role at best. The one for the forecast could be Trade Storm, who wants marking up for his last run in Meydan, when staying on for fourth from a poor draw in the Dubai Duty Free.

Prediction: 1st Animal Kingdom, 2nd Trade Storm, 3rd Elusive Kate
